life & & -- >> reporter: the community of aurora, colorado came together for a visit remembering the shooting of the massacre on friday -- >> our city will be stronger and greater because of our adversity. >> >> reporter: president obama met privately with grieving families and spoke to the media afterwards. >> it was an opportunity for families to describe how wonderful their brother or son ordo tom daschle was. >> >> reporter: sunday's service focused on the massacre, including prayers for the suspected shooter. james holmes. >> james holmes has a mother and a father and they are carrying a very big burden, so we forgive him. >> reporter: just across the street from the crime scene, mourners wrote messages on 12 crosses, one for each of the victims killed. police have finished collecting evidence from holmes' apartment. they want to know where he got the explosives and materials that he allegedly used in his

home and in the shooting. >> we are building a case to show this was delivered and processed by a very intelligent man who wanted to could this. >> reporter: holmes is in solitary confinement. his first court appearance monday morning when a judge is expected to tell him he is under investigation for 12 murders. in aurora, colorado, theresa garcia we are hearing incredible stories of bravery. one young teen tried to save the life of the youngest victim, doug blackstone has the story for "wjz." >> reporter: at a church in the city, to day, pastor michael walker told the story of heroism how a 13-year-old struggled to save the life of six-year-old veronica mow >> jerry: sullivan. the youngest person to die.

>> reporter: that 13-year-old is kaila. >> i am still in shock. i don't think it hit me, yet what i went through. >> reporter: khaila went to the movie with family and friends, including six-year-old veronica and veronica's mother. then the shooting started. >> it was terrifying because i couldn't see. i couldn't see the person who had done it. -- >> reporter: when the shooting stopped. khaila tried to give veronica cpr, but a wounded adult had fallen on top of the person. >> i was asking person that was on top -- who had fallen on top if they could move. i was begging the person to please try, please, because we have to get out of here. >> reporter: she kept struggling until the police arrived. >> i love that she thought of somebody else besides herself.

insurgent groups. the penn state sex abuse scandal. a controversial statute of joe paterno comes down, today an the university's football program now faces a major punishment. "wjz" is live with the latest developments. derrick has a look at what happened today and what is expected ton. >> reporter: the statute was row moved and now word that the nook will hit the school with major punishments, including millions and millions of dollars of fines. at penn state. the iconic statute of joe paterno no longer proudly on display. penn state's president ordered its removal after the report found that the late head football coach covered up child sex abuse allegations against former assistant coach jerry sandusky. early sunday morning. crews wrapped the 900-pound statute with a tarp, jack

hammered it into the ground -- leaving penn state with mixed emotions. >> i think it was -- it had to happen. there was too much controversy around the statute. >> reporter: now the school prepares for more bad news. its beloved football program will get hit by substantial fines from the ncaa. it will include probation, a loss of football scholarships. a ban on postseason bowl games and ay fine, reportedly millions of dollars, which could hurt the football program for years. >> when she's sanctions are all said and done, penn state will wish they had the death penalty that's how severe and punitive, i'm told, they are going to be. >> >> reporter: they fear ncaa statutes and the removal of the

joe paterno statute would not help the victims and would hurt the school more. >> it is making everybody more upset about this. what is it really doing for the college orinoco >> . sanctions will be spelled out monday morning at a priss conference. >> >> paterno's family released a statement saying this does not help the victims or penn state. >> >> wildfires burning out of control, right now, three people died. fast-moving flames scorched more than 19,000-acres. it started -- and they spread because of sprong winds, 320 firefighters and 100 security forces are working to try to extinguish this blaze. >> >> a trooper receives injuries -- police say that the trooper was responding to a call in centerville when he was struck

we only reached a high of 81 degrees. average being 87. that was yesterday. but we are going above both of these numbers tomorrow afternoon and this is why. of we got up into the 100s in the middle part of our country and a lot of that is moving our way. chance of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow night through tuesday. temperatures won't cool down until wednesday behind this. but nothing as drastic as saturday. as we head into thursday, a new front will move our way with a chance for showers and that will continue into friday. out on the waters. winds, 5-10 knots starting to bring up some of the warmer air. tonight, woe are going to see
